Telefónica names Frédéric Michel as Europe Director, Public Affairs and Communication

London, 10 September 2012 – Frédéric Michel has been named Europe Director, Public Affairs and Communication at Telefónica. MrMicheljoins Telefónica Group from News Corporation where he most recently served as Senior Vice-President, Government Affairs and Public Policy for Europe.


In his newly-created role, beginning on 15 October, Mr Michel will report to Richard Poston,Telefónica Europe’s Director of Corporate Affairs, and will help lead Telefónica's EU strategy, based in Brussels.  He will pursue a wide remit, developing and leading Telefónica’s communications and public affairs strategies on EU regulatory and public policy issues, assisting the formulation of policy, providing support and strategic advice to the executive leadership of the Company and its operational businesses across Europe.

Telefónica Europe comprises businesses in Spain, Germany, UK, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Ireland, employing over 57,000 staff, supporting 103m customers – representing 20 percent of the European population.  Frédéric will work closely with all the Telefónica Europe operating businesses to ensure a consistent and coherent approach within Brussels.

Mr Michel was previously Founding Director of the international think-tank Policy Network launched by the UK Prime Minister [1999-2003], Managing Partner of the international consultancy ReputationInc [2003-2009] and most recently held the positions of Director Public Affairs, Europe and Senior Vice-President , Government Affairs and Public Policy, Europe at News Corporation [ 2009-2012].
