- Julio Linares, Telefonica’s Chief Operating Officer and member of the Board of Directors: “Consumers expect more, they’re empowered and their online habits and preferences are driving the transformation of companies”

Miami, March 27th 2012. –During the two day conference in Miami, Telefónica brings together over 600 executives from multinationals, global organizations and public administrations to share their vision and global initiatives within the framework of the digital world, evaluating new technologies and innovation trends produced by the ICT sector, as well as analyzing the types of opportunities available to large companies and business leaders.

The Telefónica Leadership Conference, which this year marks its 10th anniversary, creates a unique opportunity to share knowledge and professional networks during presentations, interactive panels, and breakout sessions, drawing together leaders and executives from multinationals that operate  globally, many of whom represent the largest companies in the major markets in the 25 countries in which Telefónica Group operates.

Julio Linares, Telefónica’s Chief Operating Officer and a Member of Executive Committee, delivered the opening address of the event.  During his speech, he described elements of the new digital world in which we are now immersed, highlighting 'the need for global organizations to meet the challenges to transform themselves into digital companies'.

Julio Linares emphasized that in the near-term we are undoubtedly living in a world that’s 'hyperconnected and smart,' according to the trends we are seeing.   It’s estimated that by the year 2020 there will be more than 50 billion connected devices and each person will use an average of 10 devices (mobile phones, tablets, computers, gaming consoles, etc).

Consumers have significantly more clout in the new digital world: they are always connected, have access to an enormous quantity of information at their fingertips, possess technical knowledge, and are able to influence audiences through social networks, as well as benefit from all of the options and alternatives within their reach to make educated decisions.  Telefonica’s COO states, 'Consumers are fully aware of what they want, they have an insatiable appetite for applications and digital services and this behavior is shaping how companies make decisions about how they themselves are going to transform.'

Demand statistics support digital consumers’ behavior.  In 2011, there were more than 1.6 billion mobile devices sold globally, of which nearly one-third represented smartphones.  It’s estimated that by 2015, 2.1 billion mobile devices will be sold, of which half will be smartphones, and IP traffic will increase by 6 times the rate of 2010.

Telefónica, a partner in leading the digital transformation of corporations

With the future on the immediate horizon, Telefonica’s COO underlined the important role that new technologies will play to maintain and increase competitiveness and levels of efficiency for global organizations, as well as to achieving their business objectives.

Telefónica is currently a leading global provider of communication, information and entertainment solutions for some of the largest multinationals in the world.  Through Telefónica Multinational Solutions, the company aims to solidify itself as the Partner of Choice for global companies, multinationals and public administrations that face the challenges of transforming their businesses and processes to successfully adapt to the new digital reality.

The COO highlighted Telefónica’s strengths which include its global scale and reach, important strategic and social alliances, a high quality network, global coverage, and a complete offering of global solutions.  As a company, Telefónica has been able to successfully transform itself over the course of the last year, simplifying its organizational structure in two regions (Latin America and Europe) and has created two new business units: Telefónica Digital and Telefónica Global Resources which have enabled the company to capture the growth of the digital ecosystem to function as a truly global company, leveraging opportunities and economies of scale.

Celebrating 10 years of success

Over the past 10 years, the Telefónica Leadership Conference has brought together hundreds of senior executives, industry experts and global leaders to engage them on the opportunities and challenges that are found throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.  In addition to the plenary sessions, participants are able to hold private business meetings that are fully supported on the premises. The featured speakers at this year’s event include Vivek Kundra, the CIO of the United States (2009-2011), John Roese, Executive Vice-President of Huawei, Achim Berg Corporate Vice President of Microsoft, and Jo Harlow, Executive Vice President of Nokia, among others.
